An effect of cadmium on histological structure of the rat testes using a scanning electron microscopy was studied. Cadmium (CdCl2) was applied in intraperitoneal dose of 0.04 mmol.kg-1 of body weight to male rats. After 24 hours, animals were killed and the samples of testes were prepared for electron microscopic (SEM) observations. The changes in the testes were compared with the normal healthy rat testes. There were changes in the blood capillary wall in the testes. The blood vessels were injured and diapedesis was noted. A seminiferous epithelium was degenerated and underwent complete necrosis. The basal lamina was undulated. The cells of germinal epithelium died away from his edge and the contraction of epithelium was observed. Then the seminiferous tubules contained only the necrotised cells and cell detritus.
Another expressive sign of testis injury caused by cadmium was increased volume of an interstitial tissue. The interstitial tissue was extended due to the increase of the collagen fibers. In the interstitial space, the interstitial cells and Leydig cells were observed. In the healthy testes, normal seminiferous epithelium was observed with normal spermatogenesis process. The interstitial tissue in the control rats was narrow. The use of scanning electron microscope for evaluation of the changes in the testes is more suitable for observation of the surface and morphological shapes of the tissue structures. This method of observation suitably completes the light microscope technique possibilities.
