ABSTRACT

Dominant mutations are one of the most important tools for gene analysis. We study the Drosophila ananassae´s Om hypermutability system that was discovered by C. W. Hinton about 20 years ago. These Om mutations are enhancer and suppressor mutations caused by the insertion of a retrotransposon called tom, whose specificity of insertion and phenotype suggests the involvement of the Om genes in the optic morphogenesis pathway. We show that Om(1J)Su is one of the suppressors of Om mutations and that it modifies Om mutant phenotypes to wild type. TheOm(1J)Su mutation shows to be caused by the insertion of tom element in a position more than 40 Kb away from the Om gene coding region. The revertant mutations of Om(1J)Su, Om(1J)SuR, present chromosome rearrangements in the gene assigned chromosome position but no rearrangement are detected in the tom element insertion site. We show that the mutation is caused by the tom element long distance effect
