ABSTRACT

Prevention’s efficiency depends on the moment it is applied. This study was aimed to know the Cuban preventive basic health-care programs results related to hipoacusia (H) in a health-care area’s newborns and infants.

A total of 52,825 children born between 1986 and 1995 at the Mother and Infant Hospital "10 de October" in Havana City were studied. Thirty patients had H. (0,56 per 1000 liveborns) with 0,34 corresponding to the neonatal period screening and 0,22 from 28 days on (postneonat period).

There was 1,68% of Sensorineural (SN) neonatal H and 21% which was considered mixed. The first one was bilateral in 60% of the cases and unilateral in 26,6%. According to the severity’s degree there was 20% of moderate H; 23,3 % of sever one and 56,6% of deep Sn hearing loss. We conclude that basic health-care programs at preconceptional, prenatal and early neonatal stages are decisive to accomplish a decrease in infant H incidence.
