INTRODUCTION

Homicides are the most relevant type of violent death due to their public impact and association with drug dealing and consumption, poverty, racial and ethnic conflicts, changes in family structure, war (1) and, in general, when quality of life is affected (2).

Despite that homicides are under recorded in many countries, the real mortality rate is supposed to be increasing, however, Cuba is one of the Latin American countries with good statistical coverage of this phenomenon and also, an increase in homicides in general, has been found in our country (1). Regarding the instrument or the weapon used for that purpose, it has been established that homicides by stabbing are found in a second place, only surpassed by shooting in the U.S.A(1,3,4). In other countries, the ratio between homicides by shooting and stabbing is changing, being equal in some of them (5) and more frequent the stabbing cases in others (6,7,8). In Villa Clara, one of the central provinces in Cuba, this phenomenon hasn’t been studied systematically (9); thus, taking into consideration the economical changes which took place during the 2nd half of the 1980’s and the 1st half of the 1990’s in Cuba, we decided to carry out this investigation in order to find out how this situation was affecting Villa Clara during those years.
