ABSTRACT

The diarrhea observed in pig after weaning causes high mortality with serious economic consequences. In order to reduce these pathological alterations Ligmed-A was prepared from sugar-cane. This product has similar effectivity to other drugs used in the treatment of this trastorn, however it has the advantage to originate in natural resources. This compound is about 90% of lignin, an insoluble polyphenolic constituent of plants, and a component of dietary fiber. The mechanism of action of this compound is already unknown, and studies on its action in the gastrointestinal tract have focused on the large intestine and proteolytic enzymes. For this reason there is a lack of knowledge on the action of lignin in the small intestinal morphometry.

The equipment, handling and sacrifice of animals were performed in accordance with the European Council Legislation for the protection of experimental animals. Treated male Wistar albino rats received a daily oral dose of 2g/Kg of ligmed-A for 4 days, because it is the recommended dose and periodicity of the administration. Control animals received 10 ml/Kg of distilled water. At the end of the treatment period the whole small intestine was quickly removed, washed in ice-cold saline, and then fixed in formalin 10% for 48h. Slides were stained with hematoxylin/eosin for microscopic examination. In each section wall thickness, villus length and width, crypt depth, villus linear density and number of crypts per each villi were determined with an image computer program.

No significant alterations were observed in the morphometric parameters studied. On the basis of these results we conclude that repeated oral administration of four successives days of Ligmed-A, does not affect the small intestinal morphometry. These results contribute to our knowledge of this substance and increase the possibility of its application in the treament of diarrhea, not only in the veterinary area, but also in the treatment of humans.
