Introduction: short acting nifedipine is frequently used in primary care in Cuba, even cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are not improved by this treatment.
Objectives: Determine the proportion of hypertense patients treated with nifedipine related with contraindications to thiazides and betablockers.
Materials and methods: In five municipalities of Havana City a drug utilization study, transverse and descriptive was performed. Sample was calculated by each participant municipality, being patients randomly allocated from drug prescriptions certificates in the drug stores, with nifedipine prescribed in the first semester of 1998.
Results: 58.5% were female, 75,5% were white and 43.3% older than 65 years. 1106 patients (73,6%) had no contraindications to diuretics and betablockers. 281 patients (18.7%) had contraindications for thiazides and betablockers, 42 (2,8%0 to diuretics and 74 (4,9%) to both drugs.
Discussion: There is a bad habit in nifedipine prescription in Cuba, demonstrated in this study, even it´s well known it enhances the AMI risk, thus the importance of good drug prescriptions practices.
Conclusions: 26,4% of the patients presented associated pathologies which contraindicated the use of thiazidics and beta blockers to treat hypertension, thus over 70% of the interviewed patients are not benefited of the protector role of these drugs. The highest use of nifedipine might be determined by larger disponibility of the drug in pharmacies.
