Summary

We present a mature cystic teratoma associated with a Brenner's tumor. We found areas with narrow relationship and transition between the epithelial areas of Brenner's tumor and endodermic elements of the teratoma (thyroid follicles and pseudostratified cyliated cylindral epithelium of respiratory type).

The association between Brenner's tumor and mature cystic teratomas is known since many years, although areas of transition between both tumors had never been reported before. In the literature we found two cases of Brenner's tumor associated with struma ovarii, in which the transition between tumors were observed, and the authors postulated that they coul be monodermal teratomas (endodermal).

We conclude that Brenner's tumor, despite its usual and generally accepted origin in a transitional metaplasia of the celomic epithelium of the ovary, may also originate from the germinal cells that are present in a teratoma.
