Introduction
Squamous cell carcinoma is the most frequent neoplasia of the oral cavity . Different factors has been presented as prognostic factors for the survival in these patients .
Material and method
We present a evaluation of our experience with 368 patients treated by surgery alone or combined with postoperative radiotherapy between 1979 and 1997 for all the locations of oral carcinoma . The following parameters were evaluated: Sex, age, premalignant lesions status, protocol of treatment ( surgery type and postoperative radiotherapy ) and follow up (3,5,and 10 years ) . Statistical analysis was calculated by Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank test .
Results
The most frequent locations were mobile tongue and floor of the mouth . Neck dissection was performed in 76% of the patients .
Conclusions
For No patients we achieved better neck control with elective neck dissection . Margin is an important prognostic factor for the surgery of the squamous cell carcinoma .
