ABSTRACT

The aim of the present work is to study the influence of orchiectomy and testosterone replacement on soluble and membrane bound pyroglutamyl aminopeptidase activity (pGluAP) in serum, hypophysis, hypothalamus, frontal cortex and adrenal glands. Forty male mice (balb C) were distributed in five groups (control (C), orchiectomized (ORX), and orchiectomized and injected with increasing doses of testosterone (T1, T2, T3). In serum, pGluAP was significantly higher in ORX, T1 and T2 than in C. However, T3 was lower than ORX. In hypophysis, orchiectomy and testosterone produced an increase in soluble pGluAP activity, except in T3 group. In hypothalamus, the injection of dose T2 of testosterone produces a significant increase in soluble pGluAP. T3 group presented a significant decrease of soluble pGluAP activity in comparison with C and ORX in frontal cortex. In adrenal glands, T1 group presented the lower soluble pGluAP activity. No changes were observed in membrane bound activity in hypothalamus, hypophysis and adrenal gland and in soluble activity in frontal cortex. These results demonstrate the influence of the hormonal status in pGluAP activity. Therefore, susceptible substrates regulation through pGluAP could be also influenced by this status.
