INTRODUCTION: Actually the reconstruction technical, as much in oncologic as in traumatologic pathology, is at the present time one of the big challenges of the craneofacial surgery. The reconstruction plates are between the multiple procedures of reconstruction mandibular.
OBJECTIVE: We show our experience in this service about that reconstruction technical along 15 years.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: 41 cases are analyzed by a retrospective study from the year 1993, in those that reconstruction plates were used in postoncologic and traumatic defects.
RESULTS: The results were mensured by different mandible areas, through the classification of Jewell. 33 patients suffered this procedure after ablative oncologic surgery and 8 from traumatic processes.
CONCLUSIONS: We consider the reconstruction plates can be considered like a valid method in the reconstruction of lateral mandibular defects. It doesn´t constitute an elective technique for central defects, even using covering flaps. The extraoral exhibition is not absolute indication of immediate removing of the plate.
